Taking on Muscle Cramps:

My name is Kearci Smith, I am a triathlete and an Exercise Physiologist in Cardiopulmonary Rehab at the Heart Hospital Baylor Plano. I have been an athlete all my life, and am proud to say that I recently obtained my pro card that will go into effect in October 2017! Here’s my story on my archenemies, muscle cramps.

I ran for Texas Tech University for four years of eligibility. Since graduating in 2011, I have completed multiple half marathons, five half IRONMANs, nearly 50 Sprint and Olympic Distance triathlons and now have my sights set on a (hopefully!) successful professional career.

I got the “pro bug” back in 2016 when I qualified for the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Australia and ended up placing 15th in my age group (25-29). My favorite accomplishment so far in my career was placing third overall amateur at the St. Anthony’s Triathlon in St. Petersburg, Florida, completing the criteria to obtain my professional license.

My archenemy in racing has always been the crazy Texas heat. Whenever the summer weather approaches, I make it a priority to stay on top of my hydration and electrolyte intake. While I was hydrated and fueled, I still struggled with getting cramps in my feet and calves upon training in these brutal conditions. My good friend and cardiologist Dr. Jeffrey Gladden told me about this little gem called “It’s The Nerve” now called HOTSHOT.

I now use HOTSHOT pre-race and pre-workout and muscle cramps are no longer an issue. One might even say that my husband and I were some of the first test subjects of the product (he’s a big triathlete, as well). The spicy flavor is surprising at first, but I have gotten used to it. Now, its just second nature to down it and focus on my race or training!

The plan for the remainder of my season is to finish out the next three amateur races of the year. I just double up at the Age Group Nationals August 12-13th (the Olympic on Saturday and the Sprint on Sunday) and placed first! My first race as a professional will be the last of the Escape Series, Escape New Orleans. The plan is to compete in the entire series in 2018. Thank you HOTSHOT for making this possible.
